Since 1 July 1997 Hong Kong has been recolonized for 20 years by an alien authoritarian regime.
"Indeed, to some observers Hong Kong was not being decolonized; rather, it was being recolonized, with the metropole simply shifting from London to Beijing. The most pressing question for the majority of the people in Hong Kong, however, was not how this transition figured in world history but instead whether Hong Kong would indeed be able to keep its distinctive way of life after 1997 under the one country, two systems model" (Carroll, 2007:215)
